The idea of alpaca ownership was ignited while watching a PBS special about camelids in 1997. It would be four years before this idea would become a reality. In 2000 we purchased a 16 acre farm in Rickreall, Oregon, 11 miles west of Oregon’s capital city of Salem.
Our initial herd, purchased in 2001, consisted of eight alpacas; 3 females, 2 female cria and 3 males. The herd has now grown to 45 alpacas. We have a diverse line of colors within our herd; solid black, white, medium fawn, dark and medium brown, light silver gray and pinto. They enjoy apples and carrots for treats. The grandkids love visitng the farm and playing with the younger alpacas. Each summer we anxiously await the new cria to be born and the mystery of their color.
Our future goals are to continue to raise conformationally correct, healthy and abundant fiber producing alpacas in the rich blacks, browns, gray and fawn colors that comprise our present herd. We want to share these marvelous colors with other alpaca owners through outside breedings. Our true black Jr. Herdsire Tatu has settled his first females from outside our farm, along with our medium fawn Hemmingway grandson Papeon.
We feel fortunate to have discovered the “Wonderful World of Alapcas”, the owners and breeders who share their knowledge and experience so freely and to be able to incorporate these incredible animals into our current lifestyle. We are excited about the future of alpaca ownership in the USA.
